JOHN WALTON FAMILY

John Walton and Margaret Jane Downen, my great-great grandparents were both born in Wayne County, IL but migrated with their family to Phillips County, KS about 1879, with several other Wayne County families. This is their history I have created from many facts obtained from my grandmother, Ola Young Simpson, and by my own research. My grandmother was very close to this family as her Mother was the oldest child of John and Margaret. Her Mother died when she was only 16 and many trips were made to Kansas to visit all her cousins. I have many postcards and letters from several of these cousins. Others that contributed to my research on this family are  Lynne Sims,  Betty Beeson and Jan Green. Thanks to all of you, especially Lynn. She also  contributed some of the pictures and most of the information on Margaret Etta Walton. If anyone  can contribute to any of the families’ information here or have photo's, please contact me. I want to  make this as complete and accurate as possible so if anyone finds an error, please let me know.

JOHN WALTON was born October 31, 1833 in Big Mound Township, near Fairfield, Wayne County, IL. He was the last child of George Walton and Nancy McClelland Walton. George and Nancy came to Wayne County before 1828. George was born about 1802 in England and died 1833 in Wayne County. Nancy was born about 1806 in Scotland. It is not known when they  immigrated from Europe nor when they married. They had 5 children all born in Wayne County.

John married Margaret Jane Downen Dec. 20, 1854 and they had 6 daughters. John died in Logan, Phillips, Kansas on July 3, 1885 and is buried in the Old Logan Cemetery there.

Margaret died Sept. 10, 1923 in Columbus, Stillwater, Montana while living with her daughter Rebecca.. She is buried in  the Columbus Cemetery.

NANCY EMMA "Emmer" WALTON was the first child of John and Margaret born Nov 29, 1856 in Big Mound Township, Wayne County. Emmer married Robert Ewing Young March 11, 1875. They migrated to Kansas with her father John Walton about 1879 and lived there until somewhere between 1886 and 1889 when they returned to Wayne County, from letters found to  family members they were saddened by the death of their child Mamie and were homesick for  friends and other family members. Emmer passed away Aug. 21, 1906, from Renal Asthma, according to her death certificate. She was only 50 years old and was greatly missed by her 2 children. Ola especially missed her Mother as she was only 16 at the time of  her death and would talk about it to  her grandchildren in later years. After Emmer died Ola and Harvey made many trips to Kansas to  visit their aunts and grandparents. Robert died May 24, 1937 in Lamont, Iowa while visiting his  daughter Ola. Both Emmer and Robert are buried in the Bovee Cemetery, Wayne County, IL
