FADED INTO the MISTS of TIME

Ellzey Family

When I began researching the family of Emma Florence Ellzey, wife of John Simpson, the only information I had about her father came from the obituary of his wife, Barbara Davis Ellzey.  In this obituary it said William D Ellzey died in “18866” and I was unable to verify what the correct date was with the information available in the usual places for me.  In the census data there were also some inconsistencies or maybe just glaring errors.  I finally realized I was going to need some help with this one and I asked Betty Beeson, Researcher in Wayne County, IL to help me with it.  Betty, who has incredible sleuthing skills, found some court documents dating back to 1864 and 1867 that put me on the right track.  I learned William D was alive at this time, who his father was, when his father died and his siblings.  Because of this discovery I was able to trace this family back to North Carolina and their migration through Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and finally Wayne County, IL.  Most of this information came from Quaker records.

I would like to thank Betty Beeson for her help with my research and also a big thank you to Shari Carpenter for the information on the John Alvin Ellzey family and also the pictures of this part of the family.  Shari is also a descendent of the Wayne County Ellzey family with John Alvin being her great grandfather.

William Ellzey, grandfather of my William D, was born 7 Sept 1761, probably in North Carolina as his Quaker records were with a Monthly Meeting in Northampton County, North Carolina.  The records for him I found in the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Geneology in North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and then into Indiana.  William married Agatha Ladd on 20 Jan 1787.  Agatha was the daughter of Garrard Ladd and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson who were said to be “a powerful influence in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.” Agatha was born 6 Jan 1761 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. and died in Fairfield, Highland, Ohio on 11 Sept 1821.  According to the Quaker records, the family moved from North Carolina to Virginia about 1799 and then to Ohio between 1807 and 1823. In Ohio they were shown to be in Warren and Highland Counties.  On 22 Feb 1823 after Agatha died, records show he and his children moved from Fairfield, Highland, Ohio to West Grove, Indiana.

The children of William and Agatha were listed in the Quaker records but only dates of birth for Isaac and Garrard were listed so I have estimated dates of birth for all the other children.

Isaac b: 16 Sept 1787 in North Carolina;

Lemuel b: abt 1791 in North Carolina

Keziah b; abt 1788 in North Carolina

Priscilla b: abt 1792 in North Carolina

Esther  b: abt 1789 in North Carolina;

Garrard Ellzey b:  8 Apr 1796 in North Hampton, North Carolina

Garrard Ellzey was born 8 Apr 1796 in North Hampton County, North Carolina.  Indiana marriage records show he married Susannah Vickary 16 Oct 1823 in Wayne County, Indiana.  I have no further information about Susannah.  It is assumed that Garrard's first two children were from this union.   There was however,  recorded in the Mill Creek Indiana Monthly Quaker Meeting that Garrard Ellzey married Susanna Holtsclaw.  This appears to be the same Garrard Ellzey as he is listed as having been born in Virginia on April 8, 1796 with his parents being William and Agatha.  I am not sure if Garrard had 2 wives named Susanna or one of the names is in error.  I have looked at the microfilm for the Wayne County, Indiana records and it definitely says Susannah Vickary.

Susanna must have passed away because Garrard remarried Margaret Turner 9 March 1850 in Putnam County, IN.  Garrard Ellzey is shown as purchasing 40 acres of land in Wayne County, IL in Sept 1853 so assume this is about the time he migrated from Indiana.  Garrard and Margaret had 2 children, their first child, Ephraim being born in Indiana and Robinson born after they migrated to Wayne County, IL.

Court Documents found in the Court House at Wayne County, IL state Garrard Elzy died on 24 Aug 1856 and mentions the following heirs, Margaret, his wife and Children William D, Lydia J, Ephraim and Robinson.  Ephraim & Robinson were under the age of 21 and William D was their legally appointed guardian.   Court documents were dated 16 Oct 1867 and September 1864.

Children of Garrard Ellzey and Susanna Vickary are:

1.  William D Ellzey was born about 1832 in Indiana.  He was shown as a blacksmith in the 1850 and 1860 Census and moved to Wayne County, IL with his father in Sept 1853.  On 9 Nov 1854 he married Barbara Davis, born 14 Mar 1836 in Monroe County, Ohio and died 16 Jan 1918 in Geff, Wayne, IL.  She was the  daughter of Benjamin Davis and Catherine Unknown.   He died about 11 Jan 1868 in Wayne County, IL.  Barbara is buried in the Oak Valley Cemetery, Wayne County, IL but William's burial site is unknown.

2.  Lydia J Ellzey was born about 1844.  At age 16 she was living with William and Barbara on 20 June 1860 census for Wayne County, IL  In 1864 and 1867 she was part of the court documents and the petitioner with William D as her guardian.  No further information has been discovered for her.

Children of Garrard Ellzey and Margaret Turner are:

3.  Ephraim Ellzey was born 31 Dec 1848 in Stylesville, Indiana and died 23 Dec 1921 in Morristown, Rice, MN. and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Rice County, MN.  He moved with his family to Wayne County, IL in about 1853.  Ephraim married 1st Amy C Knight born 14 Mar 1880 in Rice, Minnesota.  She was the daughter of Lemuel and Lamar Knight.  She died about 1889 and Ephraim remarried Martha Adelaide Hatfield on 21 Dec 1904 in Rice, Minnesota.  She was born 15 Nov 1855 and died 2 Oct 1931 and is also buried in the Riverside Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Robert and Nancy Stuart Hatfield.

4.  Robinson Ellzey was born March 1854 in Wayne County, Illinois.  He apparently was a person that enjoyed traveling around.  In every census he had moved on to another place. In May 1910 he was living in Buchanan, Guadalupe, New Mexico; In Jan 1920 he was living in Panhandle, Carson, Texas and is shown to be divorced;  In 1930 he was living in  Borger, Hutchinson, Texas and died there 25 Apr 1936.

In Oct 1862, after Gerrard died, Margaret moved to Rice County, MN taking with her the 2 children. She remarried Cornelius Hand on 11 Dec 1863 in Rice County, MN.  In the 1870 Census they are living in Morristown, Rice, MN with Ephraim, Robinson and Martha Turner, Margaret's Mother.  Cornelius was born in Ohio 27 Feb 1812 and died in 1875 and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery

1.  William D Ellzey and Barbara Davis Descendents:

William and Barbara had eight children.  Apparently only 4 survived beyond infancy according to her obituary.

The four surviving children are:

            Emma Florence Ellzey was born 25 October 1856, in Wayne County, IL.  She married John Marion Simpson 14 Feb 1882 in Wayne County, Il.  They lived and farmed in Lamard Township and had 7 children, four girls and three boys.  Emma died 25 Jan 1924 and is buried in the Oak Valley Cemetery, Wayne County, IL.  For more information on this family please see the tab marked "John Marion Simpson."

            John Alvin Ellzey was born in Jeffersonville, Wayne, IL on 9 Sept 1860.  In the 1880 Census the family was living in the Lamard Township, Wayne County, IL.  In approximately 1882, John left Wayne County and migrated to Kansas settling in the Milford, Geary County Area.  In the early 1880's about 43 families left Wayne County for Kansas looking for land and a new start so I guess John was one of them.  John died 4 July 1942 of a stroke while hoeing Strawberries in the garden at the age of 81.  He had lived in the Milford and Junction City area for most of his 81 years.  John married Cassinda Abrilla Moore, daughter of Soloman Moore and Martha Susan King, on 24 Dec 1885 in Rice, Kansas.  She was born 11 June 1871 in Wayne County, IL. and died 18 Jan 1962 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz, CA.   In the 1880 Census, she and her family were living in Rice County, KS.  Apparently John and Cassinda knew each other in Wayne County, IL They apparently divorced because John married second to Cynthia Ellen Wilson daughter of John Wesley Wilson and Mary I Fisher.  Cynthia was born 1 Dec 1877 in Milford, Geary, KS and died 28 Oct 1950 in Waynesville, Pulaski, MO and was buried 31 Oct 1950 in Oaklawn Cemetery, Richland, MO.

Flossie and Adolphus apparently divorced shortly after 1915.  Flossie is shown in the 1930 Census married to Clifford H Kissinger who was born about 1891.  She died 13 July 1972 in the Midwest City Memorial Hospital in Midwest City, OK.  She was buried 17 July 1972 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz, CA in the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.
