FADED INTO the MISTS of TIME

Michael Josef Von Gebel

Joshua Hale Family

Joshua Hale, arrived sometime between 1830 & 1840 in Hamilton Co., IL coming from Indiana.  As each generation of his children and grandchildren grew to adulthood, some kept the spelling Hale as it was originally and others reverted to the Haile spelling;  Many of the boys were given the same first and middle name, so the variant spelling of the surname probably came into use to distinguish people for legal reasons, getting their mail, etc.  It is noted in some records that the surname will get switched back and forth, but closer to present day the Haile spelling prevailed.  Almost the same time period as Joshua appears in Hamilton Co., IL there are several other Hale’s appearing at the same time.  There also are several Haile graves at Garrison Cemetery that I have not been able to place with a particular Hale/Haile Family.  I would like to thank my Cousins Lena Haile Rainwater , (the late) Marvin Tennyson & Martha Tennyson for their contributions, along with my dear friend Betty Beeson for her help and research for me over the years on this line.
