Hanshew Family

There is a lot more information and pictures for the Hanshew Family than are posted on this site.  The work on the Hanshew Family has spanned more than 25 years and represents the hard work and efforts of Barbara Hanshew Schulz & Michael J. Von Gebel; Danita Sue Rakes made major contributions to the Laura Hanshew Rakes family line, and a memorial to her is located on the Laura Hanshew page.  Many of the Shenshew Aunt’s have donated to us the old pictures.  I want to especially thank Aunt Fern (Mrs. James) Shenshew, for keeping us up to date on all the family news, as it unfolds.  To Aunt Glendoris special thanks for all the old original letters, photos and memorabilia she gave to me on my Grandmother’s life- Mrs. Betty Jane Service.

Probably the best place to start with a discussion on the family is the many variations on the spelling of the last name.  Originally spelled Handschuh, early on with Jacob son of Conrad Handschuh, emerges the English spelling Hanshew, this spelling is held to by the Virginia branches of the family to this day.  When Nancy Catherine Wilson Hanshew moves her children from Virginia to Nebraska, it appears William H. Hanshew changes the spelling to Shanshew, but on some documents would sign it Shenshew. William’s brothers maintained the Hanshew spelling.  Edward Crockett Shenshew, my Gt. Grandfather further altered the Shanshew to Shenshew, and all his children are known by that surname.  As the story goes there was confusion over delivery of the mail so the last name was changed to help correct this problem. 

 

One son of Conrad Handschuh, Andrew Hanshew moved to Kentucky, and the surname emerges as Handshoe or Hanshoe, and in later generations of this particular Andrew Hanshew Branch they seem to opt for the Hanshew spelling or Hanshaw.  So this presents a great deal of confusion tracking a family from one generation to another.
